Special Education

Department Mission

The mission of Wilson Classical High School Special Education Department is to provide specially designed instruction and services to meet the unique and exceptional needs for students whose educational needs can be met with accommodations and modifications to the general education program.

Department Vision

To create and sustain an inclusive educational community to provide graduates with life skills, where each student is empowered to realize his or her potential.

Wilson Special Education Programs Offered Include: 

Resource Specialist Program:

RSP students are enrolled in general education classes.  The student’ IEP’s delineate the students’ goals and objectives and describes the supports and services necessary to enable the student to achieve those goals within the general education program.  Students graduate with a diploma, fulfilling the same requirement as general education students.  Students exit from Special Education upon receipt of diploma and are given information on community support.

Mild Moderate Special Day Class:

Small group settings provide increased attention to the needs of the individual student.  Academics are presented in departmentalized classrooms providing all core curriculum classes.  Students earn a diploma, or a Certificate of Educational Completion based on Board approved course.

Emotionally Disabled Special Day Class:

Some students remain in special day class throughout the day, while others may be mainstreamed for academics or electives as appropriate.

Moderate Severe Special Day Class:

MS program consists of three self-contained classes with an emphasis on a functional curriculum.  Vocational options include community-based experiences, and specially designed Vocational Education.  Graduating students earn a Certificate of Completion based on Board approved course of study.  Post high school options include adult community transition or continue at high school to age 22.

  • Occupational therapy/Physical Therapy

Best Buddies Program

Our Best Buddies program empowers the special abilities of student with disabilities by helping them form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently, improve public speaking, self-advocacy, and communication skills, and feel valued by society.
